Q: What is the difference between RS-485 and RS-422 mode in Systech products?

A: RS485 and RS422 use the same electrical interface circuits in the Systech products. The difference between the two is in how the electrical interfaces are used. RS485 mode is assumed to be used in a two-wire, half-duplex setup. In this case, the port server only listens to the receive lines when it is not transmitting, and tri-states the output lines when it is not transmitting. RS422 mode is assumed to be used in a four-wire, full-duplex setup. In this case, the port server listens to the receive lines all the time and always drives the output lines.
